Kauai’s Beautiful and Lush North Shore

~Princeville, Hawaii

Retreat to Hawaii for a tropical and nourishing week shared on the yoga mat, on the beach, and out in nature. Join Mary Susan Stults on the lush and intimate Garden Island for an incredible week nestled on the North Shore of Kaua’i in the heart of paradise.

Take time to step away from the rhythms of daily life and create space for a week of living well, time out in nature, relaxation, and island adventure together. We’ll enjoy a deep dive into the island life alongside one another as we take time to include it all.

Create space for a joy-filled island week on retreat and enjoy daily yoga practices and workshopping with Mary, guided + silent insight and mindful meditations, two surf lessons with Titus Kinimaka’s Hawaiian Surf School and coach on the beautiful Hanalei Bay by the pier (all levels), and a little creativity with a free painting workshop.

We'll slow down for free time here and there to relax, read, walk, swim, or rest, enjoy beach time, and get out for a hike to a lovely gardens and river area with a rope swing into the river. We will get out for a bit of island exploration with the option to also add an al la carte adventure on the Napali Coast and experience a coastal boat adventure with friends and snorkeling and swimming off of the boat if ocean conditions allow.

Take some time to press pause in paradise to progress your yoga practice, surf and learn on the waves with knowledgable and wonderful local surf instructor, volunteer, hike and explore, and enjoy our time together on the emerald island.

On Wednesday we will head out in the afternoon with a great local ocean activism non-profit, SurfRider Kaua’i, to learn more about ocean activism and ocean conservation, and spend the afternoon lending a helping hand with a net patrol and beach cleanup to help care for, steward, and protect our oceans and marine life.

During our retreat week we will enjoy a stay at beautiful private homes/condos in Princeville that also feature resort like amenities including a pool and hot tub, and take advantage of all of the natural beauty, walking paths, paths down to the beach, and endless beauty and activities surrounding us. During our retreat we’ll stay in full homes at Nihilani at Princeville and Plantations at Princeville with additional lodging added at Bali Hai Wyndham Resort across the street when needed. The houses and condos feature full kitchens, living rooms, laundry, and space for all to relax and unwind.

Daily brunch is included at the main retreat house after morning practice, and we will also get out for a breakfast with a view at an incredible little spot called Nourish that overlooks Hanalei Bay. One breakfast and lunch will also be served on the boat for those who choose to add on the optional Napali Coast boating adventure. If ocean conditions allow we snorkel off of the boat and the company provides everything we would need including snorkel masks and fins.

Spend a week connecting with yourself, with a wonderful community, and with nature and the land and ocean and return home feeling refreshed, renewed, empowered, and enlivened. I believe that community is medicine, and together we thrive. Can't wait to share a wonderful week together on Kaua'i.

And we have added on an addition to the Hawaii retreat week if all are up for it!

If we wish to, we can also add in a seva and volunteer morning with an incredible community and non-profit on the North Shore called Waipa Foundation and Ohana. They have an incredible and beautiful property that they steward and care for. Waipā is a place focused on aina, culture, and community.

For over 20 years, Waipā Foundation has stewarded the 1,600 acre ahupua’a of Waipā, under a lease from the landowner, Kamehameha Schools. Located along Hanalei Bay, Waipā is one of the nine ahupua`a in Kauai’s Halele`a district. Waipā is a place where folks can connect with the ‘āina (that which feeds us – the land and resources), and learn about our Hawaiian values and lifestyle through laulima (many hands working together).

If we add on this volunteer morning, we will get to join them on their property, meet their wonderful community, and it is always a very meaningful morning filled with community, helping out, learning, listening, and connecting.

Retreat to Hawaii and take time for practice, joy, mindfulness, and plenty of moments to explore the best beaches, get out into nature, venture to see other areas of the island, learn and listen, slow down and connect with yourself and in community, enjoy our days to the fullest.

Kaua’i, Hawaii

Kauaʻi is Hawaiʻi's fourth largest island and is often called the "Garden Island.”

The oldest and northernmost island in the Hawaiian chain is draped in emerald valleys, sharp mountain spires and jagged cliffs aged by time and the elements.

Centuries of growth have formed tropical rainforests, forking rivers and cascading waterfalls! Some parts of Kauaʻi are only accessible by sea or air, revealing views beyond your imagination.

More than just dramatic beauty, the island is home to a variety of outdoor activities. You can kayak the Wailua River, snorkel on Poʻipū Beach, hike the trails of Kōkeʻe State Park, or go ziplining above Kauaʻi's lush valleys. But, it is the island's laid-back atmosphere and rich culture found in its small towns that make it truly timeless. Explore the regions of Kauaʻi and make your escape to discover the undeniable allure of the island.

Princeville, Hawaii

Framed by stunning cliffside views that overlook the Pacific, Princeville is a common destination for many visitors to the island of Kauai. In fact, sunsets and beaches in the area are picturesque. Many restaurants accentuate this beauty with outdoor patios that are perfectly lit to enjoy the sunset and your meal at the same time.

You can also enjoy nature by walking, biking, or running along the many paths in the area, such as Princeville’s main corridor or Princeville Path. You can even take in a waterfall or two at the nearby Namolokama Mountain which can be viewed when there has been a good bit of rain.

Princeville offers a strong sense of community that not only attracts residents but visitors as well. Enjoy the peaceful beauty of Princeville. The town has embraced its ancient history that shaped much of the area and Hawaii as a whole.

The Princeville community continues to grow amidst Kauai’s beautiful, lush valleys and tropical forests. Through this growth, the community still values the memories and traditions of the old Kauai, as well as the area's historical ties to the Kamehameha dynasty.

Mary Susan’s yoga and meditation practice and path began early in life with her mother as a child at home in 1991 and continued in the studio at the age of 14 in 1997 with the practice of Ashtanga Yoga. Yoga

Together we’ll enjoy a variety of styles and dynamic practices.

We will be practicing once some days, and twice on some days and will be explore breath work, precise alignment and energetics of postures, the blueprint postures, meditation, reading and seeing bodies, the 8 limbs of yoga and living our yoga off the mat, restoratives, and more. We will begin most days with a morning practice and meet back on the mat in the afternoon for a workshop and asana lab to dive into and break down the asanas and practice in greater depth.

We’ll flow, workshop, and restore!

Meditation

We will enjoy guided meditation and will explore Insight and Mindful meditation, and take time for guided meditation and also silent meditation. Within this style of Insight/Vipassana meditation we will explore a variety of methods including breath meditation, and heart meditations including a compassion meditation and a metta or living kindness meditation.

We will talk about the basics of meditation, finding a comfortable seat, and the roots of mindfulness.

Surfing

We will be heading our for surfing lessons with a local instructor during our retreat and will also have some free time to surf more or add additional lessons. We will surf on the north shore most likely on Hanalei Bay, but swell dependent.

Hanalei Bay is one of the most well-known spots on the island of Kauai, and there are many other spots in and around the bay. Hanalei itself is a long right point that breaks on the eastern side of the bay for up to 300 yards over lava reef.

It is a fairly powerful wave with occasional barrel sections that ends with an inside bowl section in the middle of the bay. Farther north, up and around the point from Hanalei, is a reefbreak right called Hideaways. Further inside the bay is PineTrees, which needs a larger swell and a good sandbar setup at the rivermouth. Directly across Hanalei Bay from the main point is a fickle left reefbreak called Waikokos, which needs a large N swell and W wind. The beloved pier offers friendly waves for all levels.
