Hotel and Retreat Lodging:

Zamas Hotel in Tulum, Mexico

Escape, Relax & be Pampered in Paradise

A hotel & restaurant nestled on the Caribbean providing luxurious comfort and quiet relaxation for your stay while conveniently located near all the life of Tulum Beach.

Born of a romantic holiday in 1986, Zamas is a love affair with Tulum. Named after the mayan word zamá, meaning new beginning or sunrise, Zamas embodies the adventurous and beautiful spirit of its namesake.

Playful design pairs naturally with the elements and two acres of sand, sea and coconut trees offer the perfect antidote to the mundane. Experience the Tulum we know and love - delightfully laid back and naturally beautiful. Beachside dining, live music, candlelit romance, and bold flavors make for an unforgettable culinary experience.

The Zamas founders purchased this dormant coconut plantation in 1986, and moved with their young family to Tulum in 1993, where they began cooking meals by the sea for campers who made their way to their palm frond door. Over time, they built each cabaña with a unique design and much love, growing the property into the 23-room and two Casas hotel it is today.

The Zamas property has 3 areas of accommodations: the Beachfront and Coconut Grove garden rooms are beachside and close to the restaurant; the Jungle rooms and Casas are jungle side across the beach road, close to the pool and with easy access to the beach, restaurant, and dive shop.

We are delighted to welcome you to our family-run hotel and eager to make your stay in Tulum relaxing and memorable. Thank you for choosing Zamas.

Zamas Hotel is committed to reducing our impact on the magical lands that support us. From the very beginning we've endeavored to create a business model that thrives in symbiosis with our environment by maintaining low-density construction with local materials, recycling and reducing single use plastic, and using wind, solar, and low-energy appliances. We source local ingredients for the restaurant whenever possible, and hire from the communities that surround us. This year we're especially proud of our turtle stewardship program as we've had a record 27 nests so far this season!

Additionally, in partnership with Kind Traveler’s Every Stay Gives Back program, we support Na’atik Language & Cultural Center. The mission of Na’atik Language & Cultural Center is to provide scholarships and affordable English classes to bright, deserving students in the local Maya community so they may find better employment opportunities and continue studying higher education. Through Kind Traveler’s Every Stay Gives Back program, Zamas Hotel donates $2 US from every stay to support Na’atik.

About Tulum:

A charming destination in the Riviera Maya

Where Mayan history intertwines with the natural beauty of the Caribbean.

This ancient maritime port, known for its impressive archaeological sites, offers visitors the opportunity to explore Maya heritage that overlook the sea. One of the last cities inhabited by the Maya people, Tulum was once an important trading hub, generating enormous wealth exporting jade and obsidian.

This magic town of Mexcio is on the south side of the Riviera Maya and over the years has become a beloved stop due to its free-spirit tone and its Mayan remains. Tulum is not only celebrated for its cultural heritage but also for its vibrant way of celebrating life in harmony with nature.

Tulum is home to many breathtaking cenotes, where you can refresh yourself in crystal-clear waters after exploring the local’s diverse and flavorful culinary scene. These natural waters not only reflect the beauty of Tulum’s lush surroundings but also complement the region’s vibrant culture, creating a harmonious balance between adventure and relaxation.

With 16 kilometers of white sand stretching all the way to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. This coastal paradise is divided into three areas: the archaeological zone, the town center (El Pueblo), and the hotel zone, which offers a variety of settings.

Yoga

We will be practicing a sustainable, strong, dynamic, and compassionate yoga practice and flow marrying together the traditions of Iyengar and Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. We will slowly and mindfully weave our way through alignment-based practices each day taking time to workshop asanas and come-see-come-look moments giving students the opportunity to demo postures as we practice. Expect longer holds, break-downs of alignment and postures, and a focus on the breath. Classes are appropriate for all levels from beginners to advanced practitioners and teachers. We ask students to be truly curious and expect to take a deep and joyful dive into the practice and your own inner ecology and wilderness.

Meditation:

We will be practicing guided Insight and Mindful Meditation during the retreat including breath meditations, heart meditations such as the Loving Kindness/Metta Meditations, and compassion meditations.

Infinite Method Training and Functional Workouts:

Learn new body awareness and core principles of fitness through an integrated and sustainable workout with Dawn.

Dawn will provide assessment to find the dynamics and imbalances that are causing discomfort or leading to injuries as part of offerings.

Stand Up Paddleboarding at the Kaan Luum Lagoon

We will be enjoying a SUP and paddle Adventure at The Lagoon with Awake Mexico. We’ll enjoy free time to paddle, swim, and explore the lagoon’s clear turquoise waters. If wished we can add sup yoga and pilates on board.

Mermaid Adventure with Awake Mexico, Mary Susan, and Dawn

We will be heading out for a SUP and Diving Mermaid Adventure at a cenote with local Legend Fatima of Awake Mexico guided by Fatima. Fatima will bring fins, mermaid fins, masks/snorkels, and her underwater camera as well in case anyone wishes for her to take a photo underwater during our adventures. We will swim through channels, explore, and maybe even say hello to a friendly crocodile.

Expect to paddle, explore, dive with fins or mermaid fins, and swim through a short underground passage way or two. Photos can be taken by Fatima above and below water.

We will also head out for Stand Up Paddling at a beautiful Lagoon, as well as sailing and snorkeling and swimming off the boat. The sailing adventure will take us for a ride to enjoy a different view of the historic ruins.

Art/Create:

We will enjoy an art and painting workshop with acrylic and watercolor paints. Perhaps even some drawing.

Retreat Guides and Co-Leaders:

Mary Susan Stults Sassone, Kaua’i, Hawaii~

https://www.marysusanstults.com/

Been hanging on the mat since 1991.

Senior yoga and meditation teacher, mentor, and educator Mary Susan Stults Sassone came to the path and practice of yoga as a child and young teen with her mother at home practicing for over 30 years, with over 13 years experience of teaching.

Her love of movement and the arts began early with ballet and tap at three years old and grew with each passing year.

Mary Susan is a 500+ E-RYT Yoga, meditation, SUP Yoga, and SUP teacher, practitioner, and business owner who moved to island of Kauai from the mountains of Boulder, Colorado.

Mary teaches a knowledgeable, dynamic, refreshing, and compassionate alignment-based yoga practice that intelligently weaves together the traditions of Iyengar Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, and Vinyasa. Many describe her energy as contagious, finding her nurturing, wise, soulful, & patient style of teaching to be welcoming, transformative, & supportive to all.

Up until her teacher and mentor's passing in 2019, when not teaching herself, you could often find Mary Susan attending or assisting a teacher training or Yoga intensive with her forever teacher & mentor, Maty Ezraty. Mary's teachings and practices are reflective of her primary teachers and influences, Maty Ezraty, Sri K Pattahbi Jois, Richard Freeman, and BKS Iyengar.

Mary Susan teaches yoga, meditation, and sup yoga retreats, workshops, intensives, events, and trainings internationally, in the US, and at home in Hawaii. She offers mentoring for yoga teachers and students, yoga education and offerings, as well as guided adventure trips.

She infuses her Yoga, SUP, and SUP Yoga classes, workshops, and retreats with her grounded yet light-hearted nature. For Mary, being a student of the practice of yoga is as important as being a teacher - we are students first, and teachers second.

Mary Susan wholeheartedly believes that Yoga, Meditation, and Stand Up Paddleboarding, and SUP Yoga are for everybody, and is passionate about sharing these gifts, as well as her love of nature, adventure, travel, living well, environmentalism, ocean conservation, and the outdoors with all ages and all folks. #liveyourpractice

Dawn Theilen, Sonoma, California~

“I’ve loved athletics since the age of 3."

Being raised in Lake Tahoe and San Diego, skiing, hiking, swimming and other activities were a way of life for Dawn Theilen. However, gymnastics took center stage and at the age of 11 she competed for the Reno team. This love of movement became a driving force in her life, which led to her passion to become a personal trainer over 30 years ago. She shares this love of fitness with her husband, grown children and 3 dogs. Together they enjoy paddle boarding, kayaking and backpacking (especially in Yosemite) and live in Sonoma, CA.

Dawn's career in fitness began in 1993 at Mill Valley Personal Fitness. While attending Sonoma State University she continued her fitness path and was certified in Spinning with Johnny G and took her bicycling expertise and completed the 520 mile AIDS ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles where she discovered a need for a stronger core. This led her to Pilates Mat certification from the University of Phoenix. Discovering Pilates changed her teaching style to more functional and sustainable workouts.

She opened her own gym, Form Body Studio in San Rafael in 2001. Form offered an array of classes and trainings, including The Fundamentals of Pilates, which she taught for the College of Marin. In addition to her studio offerings, Dawn taught Pilates and correct ergonomics for the employees at AutoDesk and Kaiser Permanente. She also spoke at the Young Woman’s Conference in San Francisco to inspire high school girls to become small business owners.

In 2005, Dawn moved to Sonoma and began teaching workshops, personal training and leading hikes for The Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa where she remains today. In 2019, Dawn created her own fitness style and branded it Infinite Method. Infinite Method is a blend of light weights, core, balance combinations, stretching and light cardio and TRX when available. She teaches Infinite Method at the Fairmont, zoom classes and with personal clients. You can also find her on Youtube.

Dawn’s clients would describe her as an expert in her field. She uses an intuitive approach and thrives on assessing bodies and helping them transform into a sustainable, strong vessel. Her energy is light hearted and full of compassion, but she has an eye for form and is no nonsense when the work needs to be done. Her offerings include massage and manipulation, so that all aspects of the body are cohesively working together. Her wish for you is to be an independent, self-sufficient person for your entire life, so that you can live life fully.
